Planning a pregnancy

Dr Percy is happy to see patients who are planning a pregnancy for pre-pregnancy counselling particularly if there are any complicated medical or personal issues. Alternatively, patients may see their GP for a pre-pregnancy check.

It is recommended to commence taking a daily Folate supplement one month prior to conceiving. This is to reduce the risk of neural tube defect in the fetus during the first 12 weeks of development. This is available from any chemist or may be taken as part of a pregnancy multi-vitamin.

Private hospitals may offer pre-pregnancy seminars and maternity unit tours to introduce you to the facilities. These can be booked by contacting the hospital directly. You do not need to be pregnant to attend the seminar.

Antenatal care

If you think you are pregnant you should see your GP to confirm the pregnancy and get an appropriate referral. Most GP’s will order routine early pregnancy blood tests, and sometimes an ultrasound to confirm your due date.

When you have confirmed your pregnancy, you can choose to have public or private obstetric care. Private Obstetric care has an out of pocket cost, and you have your own obstetrician caring for you through your pregnancy.

For more information on public obstetric care click the link to Having a Baby in Victoria

The first appointment (or first visit) is usually longer (approx. 30 mins) and is done at 8-10 weeks of pregnancy. Information on pregnancy care and the fee schedule is given at this appointment. Subsequent appointments are usually 10-15 minutes duration and are every 4-6 weeks until 26-28 weeks, then 2-3 weekly until 36 weeks and then weekly until delivery.

Booking into a hospital

It is advisable to book as early as possible in your pregnancy if you want to be able to choose the hospital you would like to deliver in, as some hospitals are heavily booked and take limited numbers of patients each month. Bookings are made by contacting the reception staff at the rooms, who will liaise with the appropriate hospital. Bookings made after 6 weeks pregnancy can mean some hospitals are not able to accommodate you for delivery.

Dr Percy delivers babies at the following maternity hospitals: Cabrini Hospital, Malvern and Waverley Private Hospital.

Antenatal classes

Antenatal classes are arranged through the maternity unit at your booked hospital and usually include a tour of the unit.

Ultrasound imagery

This practice uses an Ultrasound machine for early pregnancy ultrasound diagnosis. All Ultrasound performed in this practice is not Medicare rebated.

Down Syndrome screening and fetal anatomy ultrasounds are referred to external expert diagnostic Ultrasound services.
